Mesothelioma Lawyer Andrew O’Brien Testifies At Missouri Senate Hearing on SB 572

Earlier this week, we described the efforts of certain Missouri legislators to prevent the victims of mesothelioma and asbestos disease from obtaining fair compensation from employers who wrongfully exposed them to deadly asbestos fibers on the job.
Missouri Senate Bill 572 has been “fast-tracked” by Republican Senate leaders—this year’s legislative session began only last week and hearings on the bill have already taken place.
Andrew O’Brien, founder and managing partner of The O’Brien Law Firm in St. Louis, traveled to Jefferson City this past Tuesday, January 10, to testify in opposition of Senate Bill 572. He also met informally with senators to advocate on behalf of Missouri victims of mesothelioma, asbestos-caused lung cancer and asbestosis.
Andrew has now testified on behalf of asbestos victims in front of Missouri legislators on four separate occasions, including:
- In February 2001, Andrew testified in opposition to Senate Bill 1057, which sought to limit the liabilities of companies who knowingly purchased, and subsequently profited from, businesses that made and manufactured asbestos products. Senate Bill 1057 was defeated.
- In February 2007, Andrew testified in opposition to House Bill 1850, which attempted to make it very difficult, if not impossible, for the victims of mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases to even file suit in civil court. If passed, HB 1850 would have placed unrealistic and often times unattainable “medical criteria” requirements on those injured by asbestos exposure. House Bill 1850 was defeated.
- Last year, Andrew testified in opposition to House Bill 162. That bill (and subsequent bills House Bill 92 and Senate Bill 8 ) was very similar to this year’s Senate Bill 572. If passed, House Bill 162 would have forced asbestos victims into the worker’s compensation system, a system poorly equipped to compensate those suffering from latent diseases like mesothelioma. After a very tough fight, none of those bills became law.
The Missouri mesothelioma attorneys at The O’Brien Law Firm will continue to do everything in their power to fight Senate Bill 572 in an effort to protect the rights of their clients and the victims of mesothelioma and asbestos disease. Please contact us with any questions regarding this legislation or ways that you can help fight this potentially damaging bill.
