O’Brien Law Firm Sponsors Law Event on Senate Bill 572

February 14th, 2012 Category: News Articles

On Friday, February 3, the Missouri mesothelioma attorneys at The O’Brien Law Firm organized and held an event at Preservation Hall in St. Louis historic Soulard neighborhood regarding the Missouri Senate Bill 572. As we have mentioned, should SB 572 become law, it will prevent victims of mesothelioma and asbestos disease in Missouri from accessing the court system and obtaining fair compensation from employers who exposed them to deadly asbestos fibers at work. A bill nearly identical to SB 572 has also been introduced in the Missouri House of Representatives—HB 1403.

The O’Brien Law Firm proudly hosted several retired employees of the now defunct St. Louis asbestos cement plant CertainTeed. Missouri Representative Steve Webb and Lou Aboussie, staff assistant to United States Senator Lacy Clay, attended as well. Andrew O’Brien, who continues to fight SB 572 / HB 1403 in Jefferson City, led the discussion. All speakers stressed the importance of personally contacting Missouri senators and representatives on this issue.

Representative Webb, the Chief Minority Deputy Whip in the Missouri House and Chairman of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus, answered several questions from attendees concerning the legislative process in general and how Missouri citizens can best contact their elected officials to express concerns about pending legislation. He also pledged to do all he can to see that the present and future victims of mesothelioma and asbestos disease in Missouri have their rights to jury trials preserved under Missouri law.

The O’Brien Law Firm thanks Representative Webb and Mr. Aboussie for attending and listening to the concerns of those who would be adversely affected by SB 572 / HB 1403.

We will continue to keep you informed on the status of SB 572 / HB 1403 as the 2012 legislative session continues.
