Other Asbestos-Related Diseases

People exposed to asbestos are at risk for developing not only mesothelioma, but also three other asbestos-related diseases. Lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural plaques all have been associated with exposure to asbestos fibers. These diseases each have unique characteristics and prognoses. For example, pleural plaques are typically symptomless and are considered a more mild form of asbestos disease.

However, one trait all asbestos-related diseases share is an extended latency period. It may take up to 30 years for symptoms to develop. In addition, smoking and exposure to other forms of pollution can increase the likelihood of developing the disease if you’ve already been exposed to asbestos.
