Insights on Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder Recall

This is not the first time baby powder has been recalled over asbestos concerns. Johnson & Johnson (J&J) voluntarily recalled 33,000 Johnson Baby Powder bottles with Lot #22318RB on October 18, 2019, after the FDA found traces of asbestos. On May 19, 2020, despite countless public denials, J&J removed all talc-based baby powder products from shelves in the United States. They were replaced with cornstarch-based alternatives that have been around for decades.

Talc and the Harmful Effects of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos and talc are naturally occurring minerals that form closely to one another in the earth. Fibers from the two minerals can mix during talc mining, and as a result, asbestos may be found in some talcum powder products.

Exposure to asbestos-contaminated talc in baby powder can cause ovarian cancer and mesothelioma, an aggressive and deadly form of cancer.
