Mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in the membrane or lining surrounding the lung (pleural lining) or stomach (peritoneal lining). Sometimes, although not often, it can develop in the lining of the heart (pericardial lining).

Mesothelioma is uniquely related to asbestos. The only known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. If you are diagnosed with mesothelioma, you were exposed to asbestos.

Disease Development

There is a latency period of 15 to 50 years from the time of first exposure to asbestos to the time the mesothelioma manifests or develops.

Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:
chest pain under the rib cage, painful coughing, shortness of breath, unusual lumps of tissue under the skin on the chest, and unexplained weight loss. [Source: Mayoclinic.org]

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:
abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, lumps of tissue in the abdomen, and unexplained weight loss. [Source: Mayoclinic.org]

If you are experiencing these symptoms, please consult with your treating physicians.
